I am fascinated by community engagement (on and off line). Thanks to the good side of the internet, I have worked on projects like the following:

  • In which I find people who had great encounters with David Bowie
  • In which, for Mother's Day, I collate people's reflections on who their mothers were before they had them
  • In which people tell me how they hear voices in their head when they read
  • In which readers recommend the 10 best independent bookshops in the world
  • In which I get to attend a secretive Haruki Murakami event, sneak questions in from readers, and explain how it all went
  • In which I crowdsource ideas for a "book bench" (it's a long story) and Neil Gaiman comes to sit on it (and moves it across a busy London street)
  • In which I talk to former prisoners about why books are a lifeline in jail (upon the UK government's ban on sending books to prisoners)
  • In which I am moved to tears by readers' memories of Gabriel García Márquez
  • In which (provided the idea of listening to music while you read doesn't appall you) I put together books-and-music pairings that go great together
  • In which I encourage Guardian writers and readers to look back at our great reads of the year
